Wolves boys basketball coach, players earn BCANY honors

When the Basketball Coaches Association of New York announced its 2025-26 awards, the Rockland Boys Varsity Basketball team found plenty to proudly howl about.
Coach Charlie Hicks earned Mid-Hudson (Section IX) Class C/D Coach of the Year honors, while two of his players, senior Tyler McRay and junior Benjamin Johnston, were named All-Stars.
“I’m truly honored by this recognition, but it really belongs to the athletes in the program we’ve built together. Coaching a group with this kind of dedication, heart and work ethic makes my job incredibly rewarding,” Mr. Hicks said. “Our athletes, assistants and supporters are the reason for any success we’ve had, and I’m grateful to be a small part of it.”
His athletes gave the credit back to him.
“I am so proud of Coach Hicks for being named coach of the year,” Ben said. “He deserves it more than anyone. He pushes us hard and always believes in us no matter what, but also makes the game fun.”
It was a sentiment Tyler echoed: “Mr. Hicks is the best coach that anyone can ask for, from knowing how to create plays to getting shots in and being very heavy on the defensive aspect of the game.”
To be eligible for any BCANY award, the team’s head coach must be an active member of the association. Member coaches nominated players from their respective teams to form an All-Star ballot. From this pool of nominees, coaches within each class voted to determine award recipients. In accordance with BCANY guidelines, coaches were not permitted to vote for themselves, their own players, or their own teams.
“Seeing two of our athletes earn BCANY all-stars is something I’m incredibly proud of,” Mr. Hicks said. “Their dedication, leadership and consistency set the standard for everyone around them.
The hard work and dedication paid off, according to Tyler.
“I've worked very hard day in and day out. I appreciate this award so much,” he said.
But it wasn’t only individual effort, but the work of the team.
“(Tyler and Ben) didn’t just have great performances — they elevated the entire team,” Mr. Hicks said. “While they’re the ones receiving the recognition, accomplishments like this are always a team effort. The support, competition and commitment of the entire team help push them to do their best. Their success reflects countless hours of hard work and the culture our whole program has built together.”
Ben agreed.
“I am honored to be recognized for playing a game I love, but I would never be in this position without my teammates. I could not have asked for a better group of guys to play with this season,” he said. “I am already looking forward to next season.”
